Cesena Demo: Shaping a Connected and Climate-Resilient City

Cesena is transforming its urban landscape, focusing on reconnecting the Railway Station area and the Vigne Neighbourhood to create a greener, more inclusive, and better-connected urban environment that strengthens social cohesion and supports the city’s ecological transition.

Cesena's Urban WeGeneration Action Plan and Implementation Roadmap, finalised in early 2025, defines a comprehensive strategy for regenerating the Vigne-Railway area.

The Cesena demo is progressing across four key areas:
Integrated and Systemic Approach: A holistic framework aligning mobility, regeneration, digital innovation, and citizen participation.
Multi-Modal Mobility System: Development of new mobility services, including a Bike Station, Park & Ride facilities, and awareness activities to promote walking and cycling.
Climate-Adaptive Open Spaces: Co-designed greening interventions in the Vigne area, supported by Nature-Based Solutions and microclimatic monitoring using environmental sensors.
Renovated Built Environment: Application of a Digital Twin to assess energy renovation options for the INA-Casa residential block, supported by a geospatial database and 3D models.

Several milestones have already been achieved: environmental monitoring stations have been installed in both the Vigne area and the Railway Station, preliminary designs for small-scale greening interventions are complete, and the Park & Ride service framework has been approved by the City Council.

In addition, dedicated WeGenerate pages have been published on partner websites, and an email address has been set up to encourage community interaction. In the next phase, Cesena will launch its Digital Coffee Room, an online platform designed to share data, news, and stories from the neighbourhood, making environmental information accessible and fostering awareness of local regeneration projects.

Through WeGenerate, Cesena is redefining how cities can connect people, mobility, and digital innovation within an inclusive ecological transition. By turning the Vigne-Railway area into a living laboratory for urban regeneration, Cesena is demonstrating how local collaboration and co-creation can help build more sustainable and socially cohesive European cities.
