WeGenerate in Tampere: Citizen engagement in urban development planning

In the Tampere WeGenerate Demo, the City of Tampere has focused on citizen engagement and residents’ participation in urban development planning and decision-making using digital tools. The creation of a digital twin of the railway station area green urban space is being developed with Sitowise, a Tampere-based company with strong expertise in digital solutions for smart cities. The new digital twins that will be created for WeGenerate are one piece of the bigger picture, as the City of Tampere transforms its citizen-orientated digital landscape into the Metaverse.

Previous to that, WeGenerate was introduced to the global audience at the COP28 UN Climate Change Conference in December 2023. The COP28, held in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, was the biggest of its kind with some 85,000 participants, including more than 150 Heads of State and Government. The City of Tampere had the honour of having a good presence in the event while organising a local event in the region. During the event, the WeGenerate project created the framework for all other topics related to climate adaptation and biodiversity. Inspiration was also gleaned from the Polar Night Energy company who gave excellent insights into their innovative energy storage project.
