Walking Towards Smarter Mobility: Seniors Join Indoor Event in Tampere
Seniors in Tampere were warmly welcomed to a special indoor walking event at the Hakametsä Ice Hall on 19 September and 9 October, offering both gentle exercise and a unique opportunity to help shape the future of senior mobility services in the city.
The event featured a relaxed walking session along the Ice Hall’s indoor track, complemented by light exercise at designated fitness stations. Participants also enjoyed complimentary coffee and pastries, creating a friendly and social atmosphere.
More than just a wellness activity, the gathering served as a living lab for innovation. Students from Tampere University’s Health Innovation Challenge course conducted interviews with attendees, collecting valuable insights to support the design of solutions that encourage independent movement among older adults in urban environments.
The programme began with welcoming remarks from the organising teams, followed by guided walking and interview sessions led by the students. Seniors were also invited to explore the venue freely and take part in self-directed exercise activities.
This initiative was organised in collaboration with the Data-driven City for Citizens programme, the WeGenerate project, Hakametsä Sport Campus, and the Future Sports and Health Campus project - partners united in promoting active ageing and smarter urban living.
The event highlighted Tampere’s commitment to inclusive city planning and the importance of co-creating services with citizens. As one participant remarked, “It’s wonderful to be part of something that not only keeps us moving but also helps improve life for others.”
