WeGenerate Tampere: Walking into a Smarter, Greener Future
Over the past months, the Tampere Local Circle has been actively engaged in finalising a detailed report that maps out the strategic plan and roadmap for implementing key actions within the WeGenerate project.
The Implementation Roadmap for the Tampere Demo focuses on enhancing human-centric walkability through digital innovation, resident participation, and data-driven urban planning. By integrating digital twins, community engagement, and sustainability initiatives, Tampere aims to create a safer, more accessible, and environmentally friendly city centre.
The project in Tampere will implement actions aligned with WeGenerate’s core objectives, which include:
- Towards the Citiverse – Digital Twins: Tampere is developing and utilizing digital twin technology to support urban planning and sustainability. A phased launch will engage residents, commuters, and businesses, while urban planners gain access to real-time data for better decision-making.
- Citizen Co-Creation for a Walkable City: Public engagement is central, with resident surveys (Maptionnaire) and tactical urbanism activities shaping the redesign of key public spaces, such as Laikunlava open air stage in the Central Square. Culture District, located in the western city centre, walkability campaigns further reinforce the initiative.
- Simulation of Safety & Emissions with Digital Twins: The digital twin will be used to analyse pedestrian movement, safety, and CO₂ emissions, helping planners improve walkability while reducing environmental impact. Upgrades to Tampere CityBIM, interoperability assessment with other data sources, and enhanced citizen engagement will ensure long-term integration.
- Measuring Well-Being & Life Satisfaction: Regular resident surveys will assess walking conditions and overall well-being, focusing on environmental, socio-economic, and safety-related factors.
- Economic Incentives & Awareness Campaigns: A campaign on the Tampere.fi app will encourage sustainable mobility, while QR-coded signage and the Culture District map will enhance urban experiences. Pilots and user feedback will refine initiatives, with European Mobility Week 2025 as a key milestone.
This initiative solidifies Tampere’s leadership in digital urban development, merging physical and digital spaces to create an inclusive, safe, and sustainable city.
