Children Invited to Light Up Tampere with Their Own Night Bugs

What kinds of bugs come out in the night garden? Are they tiny or enormous? One-legged or multi-winged? The Children’s Cultural Centre Rulla, in collaboration with the city of Tampere and the WeGenerate project, is inviting children to imagine and draw their very own "night bugs" in a creative drawing competition like no other.

The competition offers a unique opportunity for young artists to have their imaginative creatures transformed into glowing installations as part of Tampere’s Festival of Light in October 2025. Selected artworks will be illuminated and displayed in Kirjastonpuisto Park and the Laikunlava area, adding a magical, child-created touch to the city’s annual celebration.

A jury will select the featured works, and prizes will be raffled among all participants. The chosen artists will be announced in May 2025. In addition to being featured at the festival, the selected pieces will also become part of the Children's Gallery—Tampere’s initiative to showcase children’s artwork in public spaces across the city.

The competition is open to children of all ages. Drawing sessions will take place in Rulla’s art room from 16 to 27 April 2025, during regular opening hours (Wednesday 12–18, Thursday–Friday 9–14, and Saturday–Sunday 10–16).

This creative initiative is part of Rulla’s 20th-anniversary celebrations and highlights the importance of children’s right to artistic expression, participation, and creativity in shaping the urban environment.

Whether your night bug has feathers, scales, or six eyes, one thing is certain: it might just light up Tampere this autumn. Come celebrate, create - and leave your mark on the city!
