Bucharest Demo: Inclusive, Climate-Resilient, and Connected Communities
Bucharest District 2 is developing its demo site under the concept “Open Campus for People and Climate.”, focusing on spatial, social, technical, and economic transformation at the neighbourhood level to support the city’s goal of becoming climate neutral by 2030.
Since then, several key actions have been implemented, marking strong progress in the Bucharest demo:
• Student Canteen Retrofit: Technical documentation has been finalised, including a cost–benefit analysis and a proposal to transition to efficient heat pumps.
• Regeneration of Public Spaces: Co-creation workshops and educational activities have been organised with NBSEduWORLD and local schools, alongside a design competition through Campus Verde involving university students.
• Shared Energy Centre: Energy simulations for the canteen and school have been completed, with preliminary designs for a shared energy platform developed in cooperation with ENGIE.
• Digital Twin Development: Detailed 3D models and simulations of key buildings are being prepared to assess greenhouse gas reduction potential and support the creation of an energy community.
In parallel, the team has analysed local energy use, renewable potential, and mobility challenges, proposing measures to improve pedestrian safety around the local school, open community spaces, and integrate renewable energy systems such as photovoltaic panels and geothermal heat pumps.
Storytelling activities have already begun, engaging the local community and contributing valuable data for the Digital Twin and the long-term sustainability plan.
The Bucharest demo is a key step in WeGenerate’s mission, showing how collaborative urban transformation can lead to more inclusive, climate-resilient, and connected communities.
