Energy Literacy in Action: A Day of Learning and Sharing

On 27 May, LNEG, in partnership with Nova SBE, organised an energy literacy session at ABESA – Associação de Bem-Estar Social de Alcabideche. The event took place in one of the buildings equipped with photovoltaic modules funded through the WeGenerate project, providing an ideal setting to explore the role of renewable energy in everyday life.

The one-day initiative combined practical learning with opportunities for social interaction and knowledge exchange, demonstrating how energy awareness can be fostered through engaging, hands-on activities.

During the morning, participants rolled up their sleeves to prepare pizzas and cake mixtures, which were later cooked using solar ovens. They also had the opportunity to build two solar ovens using recycled materials, highlighting the importance of sustainability and resourcefulness in the energy transition.

The afternoon was dedicated to sharing experiences and enjoying the results of the morning’s work in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Participants gathered to taste the food prepared with solar energy while reflecting on the day’s activities and lessons learned.

The programme also included a presentation of the WeGenerate project to ABESA’s day centre users, followed by an open discussion on energy communities and the potential of solar energy. The conversation explored both solar thermal and photovoltaic technologies, helping participants better understand how renewable energy solutions can benefit local communities.

The event provided an inspiring example of how the energy transition can be brought closer to citizens through education, participation, and practical experience. By combining learning with community engagement, the session demonstrated that a sustainable energy future is not only about technology, but also about empowering people to play an active role in the transition.

Through initiatives such as this, WeGenerate continues to support the development of informed, engaged, and resilient communities capable of contributing to a more sustainable future.
